Docs
1. Tool Overview
The Gotokit XML Sitemap Generator is a browser-based, no-login, completely free tool that converts a URL list into a standards-compliant sitemap.xml following the sitemaps.org protocol.
It helps you:
- paste a URL list with automatic dedupe, protocol completion, and validation
- batch-set
lastmod, changefreq, andpriority - import URLs from CSV / TSV tables or an existing
sitemap.xml - auto-split into a
sitemapindexwhen you exceed 50,000 URLs - copy, download a single file, or download all parts as a zip
All parsing, validation, and generation happen in your browser. Your URLs are never uploaded.
2. Core Concepts
What an XML Sitemap is
An XML Sitemap is a file on your site that tells search engines which pages exist and their metadata (last modified, change frequency, priority), helping them discover and crawl pages more efficiently.
Single file limits
Per the sitemaps.org protocol:
- one sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs
- uncompressed size must stay under 50MB
Above these limits you need a sitemapindex.
Sitemapindex splitting
A <sitemapindex> is an index file that references multiple part files (for example sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml) through <sitemap><loc> entries. Search engines read the index first, then crawl each part.
lastmod / changefreq / priority
lastmod: last modified date inYYYY-MM-DDformatchangefreq: suggested change frequency such asdaily, weekly, ormonthlypriority: relative priority from0.0to1.0
These are all optional hints that search engines may use but not strictly follow.
3. Interface Walkthrough
Website domain (optional)
- completes relative paths (for example
/aboutbecomeshttps://your-domain.com/about) - builds the absolute URLs required by a
sitemapindex - when empty, relative paths are ignored with a warning
URL list
Three input formats are auto-detected:
- plain URL list (one per line)
- CSV / TSV tables (comma, tab, or semicolon separated)
- an existing
sitemap.xml(all<loc>values are extracted)
Metadata (optional)
Check the boxes to batch-add lastmod, changefreq, and priority to all URLs.
Live preview
The generated XML updates in real time as you type.
Stats bar
Shows input count, valid URL count, invalid count, dedupe count, and output file count.
Validation
Shows “Looks valid” when clean, and warnings for invalid URLs, relative paths without a domain, or a missing domain in split mode.
Sitemap Index split
When valid URLs exceed 50,000, the output is split into part files with individual download links plus a “Download all (zip)” button.
4. Recommended Workflow
- optionally enter your website domain
- paste a URL list, an existing sitemap, or CSV data
- set metadata as needed
- review the preview, stats, and validation
- copy or download
sitemap.xml - upload it to your site root and submit it in Search Console
5. Important Notes
- this tool does not crawl your site; prepare the URL list yourself
- the generated sitemap content is language-neutral
sitemapindex<loc>values require absolute URLs, so enter your domain in split mode- everything runs locally in your browser

FAQ
What is an XML Sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file on your site that tells search engines which pages exist and their metadata (last modified, change frequency, priority), helping them discover and crawl pages more efficiently.
How many URLs can one sitemap file hold?
Per the sitemaps.org protocol, one sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed. This tool automatically creates a sitemapindex split when you exceed 50,000.
What happens over 50,000 URLs?
The tool automatically splits URLs into multiple sitemap-1.xml, sitemap-2.xml files and generates a sitemap.xml as the sitemapindex referencing all parts. Downloading bundles all parts into a zip.
What are lastmod, changefreq, and priority?
lastmod is the last modified date; changefreq is a suggested change frequency (e.g. daily, weekly); priority is relative priority (0.0-1.0). All are optional hints that search engines may use but not strictly follow.
Can I generate a complete sitemap from just a URL list?
Yes. As long as the URL list is complete, the tool produces a well-formed sitemap.xml. It does not crawl your site automatically, so prepare the URL list yourself (from your CMS, analytics, or logs).
How do I deploy the generated sitemap?
Upload sitemap.xml to your site root so it is reachable at https://your-domain.com/sitemap.xml, then submit it in Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools and add a Sitemap line to robots.txt.
Is this tool better for debugging, learning, or pre-production checks?
All three. Debugging benefits from fast iteration, learning benefits from immediate visual feedback, and pre-production checks benefit from validating formatting, syntax, and edge cases before deployment.
Will my code or data leave the browser?
Most developer tools here default to browser-side processing, which is better for code snippets, configs, and sensitive text. If any feature depends on a remote model or external API, that is explicitly called out on the page.
Do I need to sign up, download, or install anything?
Most Gotokit tools are designed to open directly in the browser without a separate install. If a tool has a quota, browser requirement, or third-party dependency, the page copy will state that clearly.
