Dual-Tone Budget Flow Sankey Diagram Generator
Use Dual-Tone Budget Flow Sankey Diagram Generator
All GotoKit tools run directly online, no download required.
Upload a fixed CSV template to generate a dual-tone budget Sankey: the tool automatically treats the highest-throughput node as the budget pivot, colours everything upstream of it cyan (revenue side) and everything downstream magenta (expenditure side), and joins the pivot bar itself with a cyan-to-magenta horizontal gradient. Within each family flows are ranked across seven shades of light and dark — the larger the amount, the deeper the tone — while even white gaps separate adjacent ribbons and small line items taper into fine slivers. Labels are tiered and auto-separated so dense accounts stay readable. Light / dark canvas with PNG / SVG export.
About this tool
Budget data loses its middle when you only look at the totals. Built on the ECharts standard sankey layout, this diagram uses a left-to-right layered structure to chain revenue converging → a budget pivot → expenditure diverging into one traceable path of money: on the left, revenue line items feed in one layer at a time like tributaries and funnel into the slim vertical pivot bar that stands at the centre of the canvas; past the pivot the money switches to the magenta family and fans out to the right, level by level, until the far right spreads into a spray of fine filaments — the smallest expenditure line items. The pivot itself is a slim vertical bar filled with a horizontal gradient that runs from cyan on its left edge to magenta on its right, and the point where the colour family switches is the boundary between income and spending — cyan is money in, magenta is money out. Inside a family, nodes are ranked by throughput across seven steps of light and dark: the darker and thicker a ribbon, the larger its value, while the pale slivers that thin to a line are the smallest items. Labels are tiered by column and resolved against collisions — first-column labels sit to the left of their node, right-aligned, showing the name with a bold value; last-column labels sit to the right, left-aligned, with the bold value on top and a wrapped name below; inner columns keep only the name, width-limited and wrapped — so even dense accounts stay readable. The result reads like an official fiscal yearbook or infographic poster — made for budget analysis, cost pooling and data journalism.

What is a dual-tone budget flow Sankey diagram?
A dual-tone budget flow Sankey diagram is a flow chart that uses two opposing colour families to express money coming in and money going out. It uses a standard left-to-right layered Sankey layout: on the left, revenue line items feed in one layer at a time like tributaries and funnel into the slim vertical pivot bar that stands at the centre of the canvas; past the pivot the money switches to the magenta family and fans out to the right, level by level, until the far right spreads into a spray of fine filaments — the smallest expenditure line items. The pivot itself is a slim vertical bar filled with a horizontal gradient that runs from cyan on its left edge to magenta on its right, so you can read at a glance where the money comes from and where it goes. Ribbon width is strictly proportional to value, so where each unit of money came from, which aggregation level it passed through, and which line item it ended up in can all be read straight off the picture.
Its visual language is unmistakable: the revenue side shares one cyan family, the expenditure side one magenta family, and the two meet at the central pivot bar, whose cyan-to-magenta horizontal gradient marks the point where the family switches. Within a family the colour is not flat: nodes are ranked by throughput and mapped onto seven steps of light and dark, so the largest flows are the thickest and most saturated while the smallest become pale slivers — the shading itself works as a heat map of magnitude. Labels are tiered by column and automatically nudged apart by boundary clamping and collision avoidance, so even dense accounts never collapse into a solid mass. The overall look sits close to official fiscal yearbooks and infographic posters — ideal for reports, decks and data journalism.
Features
- Template-driven, auto-layered: download the CSV template, fill in three columns —
source, target, value— and upload it. The tool derives each node’s column from the flow hierarchy, so the number of stages follows your data and you never declare them by hand - Left-to-right layered dual-tone layout: the revenue and expenditure families meet at one central pivot bar whose colour fades from cyan to magenta; cyan converges in from the left and magenta fans out to the right, so the whole money path reads as one continuous line rather than a series of disconnected stages
- Dual-tone opposing palette: the node with the highest throughput is detected automatically as the budget pivot; everything upstream is cyan, everything downstream is magenta, and the pivot bar carries a cyan-to-magenta horizontal gradient, making the income-versus-spending relationship explicit
- Seven-step shading per family: inside one family, nodes are ranked by flow and mapped onto seven light-to-dark steps — large flows are the deepest, tiny threads the palest, so depth of colour equals magnitude
- Tiered labels, automatic anti-overlap: labels are tiered by column — first column shows name and value, last column puts the value on top with a wrapped name below, inner columns keep the name only — with collision avoidance, so dense line items stay readable
- Three dual-tone palettes: Cyan–Magenta (default), Teal–Orange and Blue–Red, switchable in one click; dark mode brightens both families automatically for contrast
- Light / dark canvas: toggle the background style and the export carries the current background with it
- Multi-format export: download high-resolution PNG (2x pixel ratio) or vector SVG that can be edited further in design software
- Local and private: all data is parsed and rendered entirely in your browser, never uploaded to a server
Where it is used
- Public budgets and fiscal balance: revenue source → revenue line → budget pivot → expenditure category → ministry → line item, the classic use of this chart
- Corporate profit and cost pooling: revenue source → recognition line → net profit pivot → cost category → departmental cost → detail account
- Funding pools and capital structure: equity / debt / own funds → funding pool → investment direction → project → specific outlay, with colour separating inflows from outflows
- Channel attribution and marketing funnels: traffic source → landing page → conversion path → closing channel → customer type
- Energy and resource flows: primary energy → conversion step → carrier pivot → consuming sector → end use, cyan for inputs and magenta for outputs
- Data journalism and annual reports: authoritative, information-dense income-and-spending flows for in-depth coverage, government and institutional yearbooks

- When you are happy, click Download PNG or Download SVG
Data format
| Field | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| source | Yes | Name of the outgoing node (the upstream category) |
| target | Yes | Name of the incoming node (the downstream category) |
| value | Yes | Value of that flow (a positive number); ribbon width is proportional to it |
Limits: up to 200 rows, and no more than 24 nodes in any single stage. The number of stages is derived from your data’s hierarchy — you never declare it in the CSV. The data must form a one-way layered structure; a circular flow triggers a warning.
Note: the same name is always treated as one single node across the whole chart. If different stages genuinely need the same category name, prefix it per stage — for example Stage1-North and Stage3-North — otherwise they will be merged. The pivot node is detected automatically as the node with the highest throughput; you never specify it by hand.
How to read the chart
Start from the slim vertical bar in the middle of the canvas whose colour shifts from cyan to magenta — that is the budget pivot (in the sample, “Total public expenditure” at 12,900). The cyan family on the left is the revenue side: revenue line items feed in from the left, aggregate level by level and funnel into the pivot bar, the ribbons thickening as they approach it. Past the pivot the family switches to magenta, and the money fans out to the right level by level, the ribbons thinning towards the right until they spread into a spray of fine filaments at the far edge — those filaments are the finest expenditure line items. The cyan-to-magenta gradient on the pivot bar is the point where the family switches: this is where revenue ends and spending begins. The point where the colour family switches is the boundary between income and spending: cyan is money in, magenta is money out. Within a family, the darker and thicker a ribbon, the larger its value — and the pale slivers that thin out to a line are the smallest line items. First-column labels sit on the left of their node with the name and value, last-column labels sit on the right with the value on top and a wrapped name below, and inner columns keep the name only with wrapping and automatic collision avoidance. Hover any ribbon or node to read the exact number.

FAQ
How many columns does the CSV need? Do I mark the revenue and expenditure sides myself?
Three fixed columns: source, target, value. You never declare stages or mark which side is revenue or expenditure — the tool automatically treats the highest-throughput node as the budget pivot, colours everything upstream of it as the revenue side (cyan) and everything downstream as the expenditure side (magenta). Up to 200 rows and 24 nodes per stage.
How are the light and dark shades decided?
Each colour family holds seven steps of light and dark. The tool computes every node’s throughput (the larger of its inflow and outflow) and ranks nodes within their family — the higher the rank (the larger the amount), the more saturated and deeper the shade, while lower ranks take paler steps. Depth of colour therefore moves together with ribbon width: bigger amounts stand out more.
With expenditure splitting into many line items, will the labels overlap?
Labels are tiered to suppress overlap: first-column labels sit to the left of their node, last-column labels sit to the right and wrap automatically, and inner columns keep the name only — width-limited and wrapped, with values dropped — so dense line items stay readable. Hover any ribbon or node to see the exact figure.
Is this chart tool better for slides, reports, or social visuals?
All three can work, but each needs a different emphasis. Slides care about legibility, reports care about structure and annotation, and social visuals care about density and style. Tune colors, labels, and export size for the destination.
When should I export PNG instead of SVG?
PNG is usually better for slides, chats, or social sharing, while SVG is better if you need to keep editing, scale for print, or embed the graphic in a design system. If the target platform does not support SVG, export a higher-resolution PNG.
How is this different from a general charting tool?
These tools are optimized for a specific visual grammar, so you can get to a strong result faster. General charting tools are more flexible across many chart families, but usually take more setup and styling work.
Can I use this tool on mobile phones or tablets?
Most tools work in modern mobile browsers, but complex charts, larger files, and precision drag-and-drop tasks usually feel better on desktop. If speed and control matter, desktop is the safer choice.
Is this tool better for one-off tasks or recurring workflows?
It is strongest for fast one-off tasks, quick verification, and temporary exports. If you need long-term automation, team collaboration, or deeper integration, you will usually pair it with desktop software, scripts, or a larger system.

Circos Gradient Ribbon Chord Diagram Generator
A Circos-style chord diagram split into warm and cold camps: warm nodes and cold nodes each form a continuous arc, and the link between them becomes a ribbon that gradients from one end’s color to the other’s. Whole-camp flows are legible at a glance for matrices such as genomics, networks or ecology; dark mode and PNG / SVG export included.
Bubble Chord Diagram Generator - Circular Collaboration Network
A bubble chord diagram places paired relationships around one big circle: each node is a bubble whose size shows the node scale and whose fill walks an aqua-to-blue colormap for strength; links bow toward the center with thickness proportional to the flow value, while node names radiate outside the ring. Built for collaboration networks, supply-chain dependencies and inter-team flows where each node also carries metrics, still legible around 30 nodes; dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Radial Arc Flow Diagram Generator
A radial arc flow diagram for country-to-organization flows: a top arch is segmented by region with country ticks along the arc, and curves stream down from each tick into organization nodes sized by total volume. Built for global trade, aid or migration narratives, with dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Two-Tone Ring Chord Diagram Generator - Bipartite Flow Chart
A two-tone ring chord diagram for bipartite source-to-target flows: a slate top half-ring holds sources and a pink bottom half-ring holds targets, each node an arc sector weighted by its total flow; bezier curves cross the open center toward arrowheads on the target side. Built for threat modeling, capability mapping and requirements traceability; dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Double Fan Colorful Chord Diagram Generator
A double-fan colorful chord diagram turns bipartite flows into an hourglass: five solid-colored arcs fan across the top and five pastel arcs fan across the bottom along one circle, with open gaps at 3 and 9 o’clock. Translucent colored ribbons cross the center waist, and every sector carries its own tick axis starting at 0 with majors every 10 units. Built for channel flows, cost allocation and requirement coverage; dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Circos Collinearity Chord Diagram
A Circos collinearity chord diagram treats ring segments as continuous coordinate tracks instead of discrete nodes: outer ticks show positions and thin curves in the center map one interval to another. Built for genome synteny, block migration, address-range remapping, batch reassignment and stratigraphic comparison, with light/dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Group Flow Chord Diagram Generator
Draws “many sources into a few groups” as one ring: the left half holds small source arcs in a single purple, the right half holds group arcs one colour each with a matching vertical legend, arc width equals node totals, and ribbons are tinted by their target group. White dividers inside group arcs show at a glance how many sources feed each one. Built for sample classification, channel attribution, topic assignment and batch destinations, with dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Spectral Ring Chord Diagram Generator
Turns a pairwise relationship matrix into a spectral ring: nodes run clockwise from the largest total to the smallest, arc colors are sampled along one continuous ramp so hue is the ranking itself (reddest biggest, bluest smallest), every relationship is a uniform thin teal line bending toward the centre, and white dividers inside an arc are that node’s connection list. Dark mode and PNG / SVG export included.
Arc Diagram Generator
A classic arc diagram that flattens co-occurrence onto one baseline: colored group ticks sit on the line, vertical group-colored labels stand at the left, and relationship strength is drawn as semi-transparent semicircle arcs whose height and thickness vary with the weight — clean even at 400 relations. Great for timelines and ranked pairings; dark mode and PNG / SVG export.
Grouped-Color Rose Chart Generator
Turn category, value and group columns into a Nightingale rose where every petal takes the color of its group, hues flowing smoothly from one segment to the next. Includes a label toggle, light / dark canvas styles and PNG / SVG export, all rendered locally.
Excalidraw Whiteboard
Use a hand-drawn online whiteboard for flowcharts, sketches, wireframes, and annotations with local editing and export.
